Generally speaking, students are not screened for dyslexia until they have completed 2 formal years of reading instruction (typically, the end of first grade).
If your child was born at 35 weeks or earlier, it may be a neurological issue.
Dyslexia is genetic. A parent, aunt or uncle will also have dyslexia.
Dyslexia does not skip a generation.
There are many classic signs of dyslexia. Below is a list of some of the classic signs:
PRIMARY BUILDING:
- chronic ear infections
- poor phonemic awareness
- delayed speech
- mixing sounds in multi-syllable words (i.e.. aminal, hostipal, pusghetti)
- stuttering
- late distinguishing dominant hand
- left-right difficulty
- difficulty learning to tie shoes
- reversals (b/d, b/p, p/q, m/w)
ELEMENTARY/MIDDLE SCHOOL BUILDINGS:
- including those listed above
- difficulty with math facts
- difficulty memorizing arbitrary items (math facts, phone number, address, birthday, dates (history or other),etc.)
- won't try to "sound out" words
- spelling issues
- inability to spell high frequency words (sight words)
- slow reading rate
- difficulty reading multi-syllable words
